A first half goal from Lyle Lakay and a second stanza strike from Sibusiso Msomi saw Bloemfontein Celtic and Platinum Stars play to an exciting 1-1 draw in their Absa Premiership match at the Free State Stadium on Sunday. Punya Sele Sele took control of the match from the start, but with Dikwena’s defence in tact, they struggled to break them down. The first convincing effort came in the 15th minute from the home side.
Thapelo Morena did well to get past the Stars midfield before firing a long range shot just beyond the target. In the 25th minute, Celtic came close again. This time Helder Pelembe blasted the ball into the top right post.
The hosts finally made an opportunity count when Lakay netted the first goal. This was after Morena was brought down on the edge of the box. That resulted in a set piece taken by Lakay, whose shot into the bottom left corner of the net opened the scoring.
A minute before half-time, Mduduzi Nhlapho almost caught Patrick Tingyemb off guard with a header but the keeper quickly rearranged himself to make the save. Cavin Johnson’s men came back attacking in the second half with Msomi slotting in an equaliser. He hit from outside the box and the ball deflected on a Celtic player before making its way into the net.
Ten minutes later, Pelembe nearly restored the hosts’ lead when he found some space 16 yards out but his shot was saved by Mbongeni Mzimela. In the 63rd minute, Siwelele’s Geoffrey Massa went through on goal but failed to capitalise on the opportunity. Neither team was able to score a winning goal as the final whistle blew and Clinton Larsen and Johnson shook on a draw.
