The Cape Cobras saw off the Barbados Tridents in a Super Over to record their first win of the tournament in their Champions League T20 encounter in Mohali on Friday. Cobras skipper Justin Ontong won the toss and put the men from the West Indies into to bat. Charl Langeveldt (1/16) struck early dismissing Shane Dowrich for a duck as the Tridents found themselves on 1/1.
Dilshan Munaweera added six runs to his side’s total before his partner Raymon Riefer was run out for one. Munaweera and Jonathan Carter put on a 75 run partnership to see their side to 77/2 before Munaweera was also run out leaving them on 82/3. James Franklin was the new man in but only managed three runs before he was caught behind off the bowling of Langeveldt.
Jeevan Mendis was the new man in and contributed ten runs to his side’s total before he was dismissed by Sybrand Engelbrecht, closely followed by Jason Holder (0) and Ashley Nurse (0) as Barbados found themselves on 164/7. Carter (111 not out) played a good innings to bring up a century off 65 balls before Akeal Hosein departed for six runs. The centurion saw out the 20 overs as the Barbadians finished on 174/8.
In reply Hashim Amla and Richard Levi put on a good opening stand of 52 before Levi was clean bowled by Hosien for 39. Ramela joined Amla and managed 14 runs before he departed with his side on 99/2 requiring a further 76 runs off 54 balls. Amla brought up his half century and with Dane Vilas helped their side to 125/2 before he was dismissed by Mendis (4/27) for 59.
Robin Peterson joined Vilas at the crease and added nine runs to his team’s total before he was dismissed closely followed by Vilas for 14 by Mendis leaving the Capetonians on 143/5. The two new batsmen at the crease were Justin Kemp (12 not out) and Engelbrecht (19 not out) who put on a 31 run stand to get them to 174/5 to take the match into a Super Over. The Cape Town-based side’s batsmen Levi and Vilas scored 11 runs without losing a wicket.
The Tridents batsmen Munaweera and Carter got off to a good start before Munaweera departed. They required four runs of the last ball of the over but were unable to as the Cobras won the super over to take the match.
