The Kings XI Punjab punished the Cape Cobras by seven wickets at the Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali on Sunday and top Group B in the Champions League T20. Punjab won the toss and elected to bowl first. The Cobras got off to a flying start as they reached 58/0 after 5 overs but Hashim Amla lost his wicket for 40 off 22 balls as Omphile Ramela joined Richard Levi in the middle.
Ramela lost his wicket to Thisara Perera for 12 as they were 84/2 after 10 overs and still in a good position to post a good total. Levi was sent packing for 42, caught and bowl by Glenn Maxwell at 106-3. Dane Vilas struck two boundaries but he was soon caught at long on by Perera as the situation started to unravel.
After 16 overs the Capetonians were 122/5. Sybrand Engelbrecht was bowled after trying to play a reverse sweep and Paul Adams’ men had collapsed to 135 all out. Anureet Singh finished with 3/12 and Akshar Patel 3/15.
Manan Vohra and Virender Sehwag started well but Vohra lost his wicket to Robin Peterson for 23 inside the powerplay. After 6 overs the Kings XI were 43/1. Sehwag and Wriddhiman Saha built a partnership for the Indian side but Sehwag lost his wicket to Peterson for 23 runs, with the score on 74/2 after 10 overs.
Maxwell blasted two massive sixes after a slow start but he was dismissed by Engelbrecht for 23 off 19 balls. Even at 108/3, the Indian Premier League team were unlikely to throw it away with 36 balls still to come. David Miller joined Saha at the crease as they were looking to finished off the game.
The South African played a few strokes while Saha was knocking the ball around hardly looking to be in a panic. The pair managed to see their side home and beat the Cobras by seven wickets.
