Cape Cobras Can Still Improve, Says Paul Adams

Cape Cobras coach, Paul Adams, has short-term memory loss about that bonus-point defeat at the hands of Titans in their first-round clash of the Momentum One-Day Cup competition.  And he is quick to remind detractors of the Nashua Cape Cobras about their excellent record against the Titans at the Newlands cricket stadium.  The Unlimited Titans and the Cobras go head to head at Newlands on Friday in a domestic One Day Cup encounter.

The Cobras romped to a five-wicket win against the bizhub Highveld Lions on Saturday , and extended their lead at the summit of the table to nine points.  If the hosts thump the Titans on Friday and the Sunfoil Dolphins stutter during the weekend, the Cobras will establish a virtually unassailable lead at the top of the table.  Adams applauded the excellent batting by Richard Levi and Andrew Puttick against the Lions and the sensible tactics used by Yaseen Vallie and Sybrand Engelbrecht in approaching the target to set up the comfortable win at the Wanderers.

But he was critical of the fact that the Cobras gave the Lions too many free bees with the ball. “We could have been more disciplined,” he said.  Rory Kleinveldt (one for 32 in 10 overs) and Justin Kemp (two for 37 in 10 overs) were superb in that victory against the Lions.

Robin Peterson has arguably been the finest bowler in SA domestic 50-over cricket this season, but was not at his supreme best at the start of his spell against the Lions.  This was understandable, as the Cobras skipper was side-lined due to a finger injury for several weeks.  The Cobras suffered a bonus-point loss to the Titans in the first round.

Yet, the visitors will be without two of their batting heroes, Farhaan Behardien and Theunis De Bruyn, who collectively engineered that win for the Titans.  The Cobras squad for the match against the Titans at Newlands is: Robin Peterson (capt), Sybrand Engelbrecht, Clyde Fortuin, Justin Kemp, Rory Kleinveldt, Richard Levi, Aviwe Mgijima, Dane Paterson, Andrew Puttick, Omphile Ramela, Mthokozisi Shezi, Mohammed Vallie, Stiaan Van Zyl
