The Brumbies downed the Chiefs 41-23 in a replay of last year’s Vodacom Super Rugby final in Canberra on Friday. Both teams were awarded a penalty a piece early in the first half however it was the visitors who took the lead through Gareth Anscombe after Christian Leali’fano missed one. The home side began to get into their stride going forward and were rewarded with a try from Matt Toomua and a penalty from Leali’fano to charge into the lead and head into half time 13-6 up.
Anscombe slotted over a penalty for the Chiefs early in the second half to take the the score to 13-9. The men from Canberra hit back straight away with three tries and a penalty to take a commanding 36-9 lead and leave the New Zealanders in their wake. A late comeback from the men from Waikato saw them score two tries on the bounce to take the score to 36-23.
But the home side were not done yet when an interception from Ruan Smith saw Toomua over for his second of the night to see their side run out 41-23 winners. The Brumbies increased their lead to remain top of the Australian Conference and exact revenge on the champions.
