Brazil 2014: Group G

With just two days to go to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, we now take a look at another “group of death”, Group G, featuring Germany, Ghana, Portugal and the United States of America.  Matches will be played in Brasilia, Fortaleza, Manaus, Natal, Recife and Salvador.

One of the tournament favourites, Joachim Low’s men have been so close now reaching the semi-finals of every major tournament since 2006.  There are many who feel that the Germans can go all the way in 2014 and that perhaps it is their turn and their time.  Low is backed up by a great goalkeeper, solid defence, creative midfield and lethal strike force.  However history is against Germany.  In nine FIFA World Cup™ tournaments held outside Europe, only once has a European team triumphed, and never in South America.

Prediction: Semi-finalists

The Black Stars were the darlings of the 2010 tournament in South Africa reaching the quarter-finals before a penalty shootout elimination at the hands of Uruguay when Luis Suarez was controversially sent off for handling the ball during normal time.  This time around the Ghanaians are slightly weaker and in a very tough group and repeating their heroics of 2010, while certainly possible, do appear improbable.

Prediction: Group stage

Cristiano Ronaldo might well be doomed to become the greatest player never to win the World Cup like Ferenc Puskas and Alfredo Di Stefano.  However if Ronaldo can carry the Portuguese all the way, he will do everything in his power to do so.  The truth is that the Portuguese may well struggle to reach the next round but with the World Player of the Year in their ranks, there is every chance of a win every day of the week.

Prediction: Second Round

Jurgen Klinsmann is in charge of the Stars and Stripes these days and the Yanks are playing an ever more expansive game as per the German’s philosophy.  Sadly for the States they have been drawn in a group from hell and while the American Dream is a very real thing, this could just turn out to be the nightmare Klinsmann was dreading.

Prediction: Group stage
