The Blue Bulls outclassed the Lions in a 36-26 victory at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday in an eye catching final match of round five in the Absa Currie Cup. The Xerox Golden Lions drew first blood with just six minutes into the match through a Ruan Combrinck penalty. Jacques-Louis Potgieter leveled matters with a well taken penalty three minutes later before Combrinck restored the visitors’ lead to make it 6-3 minutes later.
Potgieter added two penalties to his name to hand his side a lead for the first time in the match. From there on it was a seesaw match with both sides exchanging evenly matched blows, however the Vodacom Blue Bulls had the upper hand at the break leading 19-12. Potgieter maintained his 100% scoring record in the match when he slotted home yet another penalty in the 44th minute.
A much better looking Bulls side continued to pile more misery on their opponents. This time Burger Odendaal crossed the line in the 50th minute leaving Potgieter to convert and make it 29-12. Johan Ackermann’s troops had to wait until the 69th minute to find their first try of the match through Albertus Smith.
Martin Muller scored a second with Combrinck converting on both occasions to cut the deficit to 29-26. Grant Hattingh put the game beyond doubt in the 79th minute when he crossed the line to make it 36-26 at the final whistle. The home side managed to get themselves off the bottom half of the table while the Lions failed to register their fourth win of the campaign.
