A derby in the City of Roses will headline round three of the FNB Varsity Cup Presented by Steinhoff International. UFS-Shimlas and CUT-Ixias face each other for the first time in the competition in the early kick off in the day’s first televised match. Shimlas are third on the log and are firm favourites against CUT, who are winless after two matches.
Ixias have been dealt a big blow after their skipper Charlie Hitchcock was ruled out for the remainder of the season following a hamstring tear during training last week. Elsewhere, Ikeys take on NMMU at the Green Mile in Cape Town while UJ hosts NWU-Pukke in Johannesburg. Both matches start at 18:30.
The good news for the Madibaz is that skipper Jarryd Buys is back from injury to lead the team in what is expected to be their toughest match of the season. In Monday night’s other televised fixture, top-of-the-log Tuks hosts Maties in Pretoria at 19:00. Maties have drawn two consecutive games and will be looking to get their first win on the board.
Maties have made a host of changes to their line up for the match. Craig Barry moves from wing to fullback with Brandon Asher-Wood filling the void left by Barry and will be bursting at the seams ahead of his first taste of Varsity Cup rugby. At pivot, Brandon Thompson has impressed enough in his two cameos to earn selection and will look to increase the pace of the game from the outset.
Wilhelm Van Der Sluys has recovered from illness to return to the second row and will take over the captain’s armband. Kobus Van Dyk continues to shows his versatility by reverting to the back row, where he is joined by Lungelo Chonco who swaps with Justin Benn. In the front row John Hubert Meyer earns a first start at tighthead and he is backed up by JE Van Der Merwe, who could potentially make his debut from the bench.
