New Zealand beat England by nine runs on the Duckworth/Lewis method in their rain affected ICC World Twenty20 encounter at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong on Saturday. New Zealand won the toss and chose to field. The English lost the wicket of Alex Hales (0) in the first over leaving them on 1/1.
Michael Lumb and Moeen Ali steadied the innings and brought up their 50 partnership however Ali (36) and Lumb (33) soon departed with England at 76/3. Jos Buttler and Eoin Morgan got England to 101/3 before Morgan was dismissed for 12 bringing in Ravi Bopara. Bopara and Buttler took the English to 126/4 before Buttler chopped one on from Corey Anderson leaving them 129/5. Chris Jordan managed only eight runs bringing in Tim Bresnan (24 not out) who played some good shots along with Bopara (17 not out) to end their innings on 172/6.
The Black Caps got off to a good start with Martin Guptil and Kane Williamson at the crease taking them to 25/0. Guptil (11) was dismissed by Jade Dernbach (1-13) bringing in the skipper Brendan McCullum. Williamson (19 not out) and McCullum (16 not out) took New Zealand to 52/1 in 5.2 overs which was ahead of the Duckworth/Lewis par score when rain stopped play. No further action was possible and the Kiwis ran out winners by 9 runs on the D/L method. The man of the match was Corey Anderson for his performance in the field taking two good catches and his 2-32 with the ball.
