Bidvest Wits beat SuperSport United 1-0 at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday evening. Matsatsantsa hosted the Clever Boys with three points at steak and a chance to register an early win on the opening weekend of the 2014/15 Absa Premiership campaign. Both teams had a fair share of the ball but failed to make any of their chances count.
Thuso Phala thought he had broken the deadlock in the 27th minute but his attempt was cleared off the line. Wits had little to smile about later in the opening stanza but Sibusiso Vilakazi almost gave his side a lead in the 33rd minute but his shot went wide. The match remained goalless at the break.
Bradley Grobler missed a golden opportunity in the 51st minute failing to feast on a brilliant ball from Lebogang Manyama. The boys from the capital failed to convert their chances as Wits was handed an opportunity to take the lead from the spot. Vilakazi played well to get into the box but was fouled inside the area.
Sthembiso Ngcobo calmly converted the spot kick to make it 1-0. Both teams continued to exchange blows without any luck in front of goal. Bennet Chenene came close to leveling matters but was denied by a superb Jackson Mabokgwane save in the 86th minute. Gavin Hunt’s side held on to win the match 1-0 as Cavin Johnson’s men fired blanks.
