Benfica One Step Ahead Of Juve

Juventus lost for the first time this season in the Uefa Europa League when they went down 2-1 to Benfica in the semi-final first leg at the Estadio Da Luz on Thursday.  The Portuguese club will take this slender advantage to Turin next week. Ezequiel Garay scored the opening goal just after just three minutes.

However, Carlos Tevez equalized for the Old Lady in the second half on 73 minutes.  Brazilian striker Lima was a substitute eleven minutes earlier and he would prove to make a difference.  The South American journeyman has played for nine different clubs in his country without settling down. On this occasion he scored a brilliant goal six minutes before the game ended, which put his team in the lead and Juventus had no come back.

The Italians are pursuing their first continental trophy in 17 years.  Cladio Marchisio and Giorgio Chiellini both had chances to score in the final minutes of the game but they had no luck.  The Eagles are close to reaching their second straight Europa League final while Juventus will have to work hard next week in the the second leg at the Juventus Stadium.  Benfica boss George Jesus said, “Our victory doesn’t decide anything, it’s still wide open, but at least we go to Turin with a lead.”
