Benfica Fights Back At Astana

FC Astana held Benfica to a 2-2 draw in the Uefa Champions League on Wednesday at the Astana Arena.  The Portuguese club was able to come back from a 2-0 deficit to salvage a point.  The away team started off decently after Eliseu was making good efforts to cross the ball from the left side to the penalty area in the opening minutes of the first half although there was nothing to show for it.

Benfica started to show more intent going forward as it searched for the opening goal.  Although Rui Vitoria’s troops showed more intent, the home team did not sleep on the job.  Junior Kabananga read Patrick Twumasi’s run well before the Congolese fired in the cross from the left before Twumasi connected a powerful header that was too powerful for Julio Cesar to do anything about.

Shortly thereafter Stanimir Stoilov’s side was two goals to the good.  The Blue and Yellows were awarded a free kick that was taken by Foxi Kethevoama that found defender and goalscorer Martin Anicic back of his head and went into the net.

Five minutes before the end of first half the visitors were back in the match.  After many attempts Jonas made a run down the right, crossed the ball to the centre and found Raul Jimenez, leaving the striker with a clean finish.  Aguias tried to level In the early minutes of the second half but it was Astana that could have been 3-1 up after Twusami’s attempt was blocked by Cesar.

After many failed attempts in the second half the away side finally equalised when Andre Almerida crossed  to a crowded penalty area and found Jimenez who toe-poked the ball ioto the bottom left side of the goal net.  This result ends Astana’s hopes of qualifying for the Last 16.  It also means Benfica finds itself level on top with Atletico Madrid in Group C.
