Barcelona defeated Ajax Amsterdam 2-0 in a Uefa Champions League clash on Wednesday to secure their spot in the last 16 of the competition. Ajax had a lot of chances to secure the win at home and will lament their lost opportunities. Davy Klaassen had a chance in the 27th minute to give the Dutch side the lead but his volley was well saved by Ter Stegen. Lionel Messi opened the scoring in the 36th minute.
Former Ajax striker Luis Suarez had a chance to doubled the lead in the 59th minute for his new side but his effort was easily saved. Messi then tapped home his second from close range with 14 minutes to go to make it 2-0 and equalled Real Madrid legend Raul as the top goalscorer in the Champions League with 71 goals. The comfortable victory sees Luis Enrique’s men progress to the second round.
