South Africa is through to the third round of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers after defeating Angola by a goal to nil making it 4-1on aggregate at the Mosses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Tuesday night. The Angolans started the match attacking with Jackson Mabokgwane being tested early in the first half. A quick one-two saw Bafana Bafana receiving the first corner kick of the match in the seventh minute but Palancas Negras dealt with the cross from the near side.
Tokelo Rantie made a good run on the near side but failed to deliver a cross into the box after a well-defended attack by the visiting side 10 minutes into the half. Rivaldo Cotzee made a goal-saving tackle preventing the away side from scoring an opener in the 12th minute after a cross from the far side. Thamsanqa Gabuza failed to connect with Rantie’s pass to score the opener in the box but was already ruled offside in the 21st minute.
Both teams seemed to be relaxed with few attempts going forward and being reckless in some incidents going into half-time. Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Mandla Masango’s short at goal went wide four minutes into the second half leaving the men in red to regroup. The home side received a free kick not far from the box after Fabricio Mafuta was shown a yellow card in the 63rd minute following a reckless play bringing down Thulani Serero but the Angolans charged down the set piece.
Palancas Negras scored an own goal in the 66th minute after Dias Caires connected with Rantie’s header in the box. Angola continued searching for what was going to be a consolation goal but at the end it was Shakes Mashaba’s men that go through to the next stage of qualifying.
