South Africa’s 2015 Africa Cup of Nations campaign hangs in the balance after playing out a 1-1 Group C draw against Senegal at the Estadio de Mongomo on Friday. Bafana Bafana now have it all to do when they face Ghana, knowing that anything less than victory against the Black Stars simply will not do. The South Africans went into the encounter knowing a draw would be the minimum requirement against the Lions of Teranga, who themselves could have secured a quarter-final berth with a victory.
And it was Shakes Mashaba’s men that had the first chance at goal as Sibusiso Vilakazi unleashed a powerful effort from outside the box but was denied by Bouna Coundoul. Mashaba’s men had another chance at goal from a set piece but Oupa Manyisa put his shot wide. Mame Biram Diouf almost scored late in the first period when he had a free header but his attempt went wide of goal.
The sides went into the break deadlocked. The 1996 champions put together a sweeping move in the 47th minute found Oupa Manyisa lurking at the back post who showed superb composure under pressure to finish well, placing the ball at the opposite post beyond the reach of Coundoul. But they joy was short lived as Senegalese found the equaliser when Serigne Mbodji snuck in unmarked and headed home.
There was a late chance for the West Africans to snatch a winner but Jackson Mabokgwane pulled off a great save as the match ended in a draw.
