South Africa are out of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations after a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Ghana in Mongomo on Tuesday. Bafana Bafana needed to win as well as a favour in the match between Algeria and Senegal to progress. As it turned out, the Desert Foxes defeated the Senegalese 2-0 so a mirror result would have seen Shakes Mashaba’s men progress.
Sure enough Mandla Masango struck a glorious volley from outside the box that dipped perfectly to hand Mashaba’s men the lead in the 17th minute. It was a lead the South Africans would hold onto until the deep into the second half. John Boye first equalised for the Black Stars before Andre Ayew broke South African hearts to send Avram Grant’s charges into the quarter-finals.
Mashaba will lament his side’s inexperience, particularly at the back after leading in each of their three group matches, only to falter with two defeats and a draw in Equatorial Guinea.
