Australia Win Netball Gold At The Commonwealth Games

The Australians beat New Zealand 58-40 in the betball gold medal match at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Sunday afternoon.  In the first quarter it was end-to-end stuff as the teams finished tied at 14-14 in the first quarter.  The New Zealanders made 16 attempts to the Aussies’ 17.

In the second quarter Australia took an early lead but seconds later they scored another two quick goals as they went in front by three.  The Silver Ferns then scored their first points in the second quarter and continued to push on but the Diamonds remained in front and led 28-24 at half-time.  In the third quarter the Australians continued where they left off as they kept applying pressure and were soon in front by eleven goals and New Zealand’s women simply had no answer to their Antipodean neighbours.

The New Zealanders tried to reduced the deficit but the Aussies were too good for them as they kept scoring with ease.  In the final quarter, the Silver Ferns dominated the first two minutes, as they reduced the deficit to nine points but they could not stop the Australian avalanche that would eventually secure victory by a whopping 58 points to 40.

Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls defeated England 52-48 to secure the bronze medal earlier in the day.
