The hosts finished on 307/7 with contributions by Shaun Marsh (45) and Brad Haddin (42), with one ball to spare.
The Australians won the toss and sent the tourists in and Ian Bell top scored with a superb 141. Bell hit 15 fours and a six in his 125-ball innings. The English will kick themselves as they found themselves in a strong position at 254/3 in the 42nd over but faltered towards 303/8.
Joe Root ably assisted Bell with 69 from 70 balls. No bowler took more than two wickets in either innings.
