Atletico Madrid were crowned La Liga champions following a 1-1 draw with Barcelona in the final game of the Spanish League season at Camp Nou on Saturday evening. The permutations in the title-deciding fixture were simple as Barca needed to win the clash on home soil in order to claim the league, while a draw was more than enough for Atletico to walk away with the title. It was an intense clash especially in the first half.
Atletico suffered a double blow as Diego Costa and Arda Turan limped off the field injured. The home side got their much-needed goal through Chile international Alexis Sanchez who drilled an unstoppable drive into the roof of the net on 33 minutes to send the home fans into delirium. Just after the recess, Atletico started with a bang and former Barca forward David Villa almost came back to haunt his former outfit when he struck the woodwork and witnessed his efforts vanishing into thin air.
There would be no barrier in the 49th minute as Diego Godin levelled matters to the delight of coach Diego Simeone. The hosts kept up the pressure and Lionel Messi got one in the back of the net but was correctly ruled out for offside. Barca kept knocking on Atletico’s door, but Los Rojiblancos’ shape was too fixed to spoil.
The score line stayed the same to see Atletico being crowned La Liga champions for the first time since the 1995/96 campaign. A trophy-laden season is in the offing as Simeone’s side will contest the Uefa Champions League final next week against city rivals Real Madrid.
