Atletico Madrid, who won the first-leg 1-0 of their Uefa Champions League Last 16 tie against AC Milan, progressed to the quarter-finals following a 5-1 aggregate win over the seven-time competition winners, at the Vicente Calderon on Tuesday night.
Diego Costa opened the scoring just three minutes in with a fantastic finish. Koke curled a sublime cross towards the far post and Costa showed great athleticism to divert a side-footed volley past Christian Abbiati. However Atletico were forced back down to earth in the 27th minute through a Kaka header. Following good use of the width of the pitch, Andrea Poli took charge and pin-pointed a cross to the back post where Kaka headed home from close range. The Brazilian would miss another opportunity later on in the half and the hosts did not need a second invitation as Arda Turan struck to make it 2-1. The Turkey International’s volley took a rather big deflection off Daniele Bonera before looping over Abbiati and snuggling in the bottom corner.
The game was not yet. After the interval, Raul Garcia and Costa were back on the score sheet to complete a 4-1 trouncing of the once-mighty Milan. Garcia rose high to head Gabi’s free-kick into the bottom corner and as the the final whistle loomed Costa fired across goal and into the bottom corner in the 85th minute to seal a resounding triumph for Atletico Madrid and a quarter-final berth for Diego Simeone’s men.
