Paul Lambert is facing a tough challenge of having to reinforce his team and hope to better a 15th-place finish from the previous campaign. Aston Villa have already tasted heavy defeats to minnows in preseason friendly matches which might be a blessing in disguise as they can now focus on patching where the roof is leaking. Villa is one of the most decorated clubs in England, but luck seems to have eluded them in recent years.
In their cabinet they have seven Premier League titles, seven FA Cup trophies, five League Cups as well as three European club competition trophies. In order to try and get in a good shape to win silverware again Lambert signed Joe Cole from West Ham United, Kieran Richardson from Fulham and Philippe Senderos from Valencia. These are experienced campaigners formerly with some of the big teams in Europe.
The Scottish mentor loaned out eight of his players to various lower division clubs and will hope they return to Villa Park with much needed experience to battle in the country’s elite football league. Club captain Ron Vlaar is still undecided whether to continue playing for Villa or to take his services elsewhere but Lambert is still in talks with him with hopes of convincing him to stay. Last season is the one to forget for the Villans and if their performance from the previous campaign is anything to go by, they might find themselves playing in the Championship at the end of this campaign.
Villa will begin their quest for redemption with a tricky away encounter against Stoke City on the 16th of August.
