Southampton continued their undefeated run as a second half strike from Nathaniel Clyne helped them claim a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa at Villa Park on Monday night in the English Premier League. The Saints remain in second spot in the league standings, while Paul Lambert’s men move up to 16th. Ronald Koeman’s side dominated the opening exchanges of the first half but were let down by poor decision-making in the final third and Villa’s defence stood firm.
However, it was Gabriel Agbonlahor who gave the Villans the lead with their first effort of the match in the 29th minute, as the striker rounded the on-rushing Fraser Forster before finishing into an empty net. Brad Guzan came to Villa’s rescue in the 36th minute, pulling off a fine save to keep out Sadio Mane’s curling effort. Southampton continued to dominate the game in the second half but couldn’t break a solid Villa defence.
Andreas Weimann should have doubled Villa’s lead in the 77th minute but the he blasted over the bar from 12 yards out after being teed up by Agbonlahor. The home side were punished for that missed opportunity three minutes later, when Clyne got on the end of Ryan Bertrand’s cross before placing his effort into the far corner to the back of the net. The draw means Lambert’s lads, who haven’t had a great season thus far, are now winless in their last eight league games, while the Saints ended a run of four straight wins.
