Aston Villa Books FA Cup Final Spot

A goal each from Christian Benteke and Fabian Delph helped Aston Villa to a 2-1 victory over Liverpool in their FA Cup semi-final at Wembley on Sunday.  The Villans were able to have some positive possession and keep themselves in this tie at first.  However from some poor defending on their part they found themselves a goal down inside 30 minutes when Philippe Coutinho beat three defenders and managed to beat Shay Given as he put the Merseyside outfit in front.

That lead lasted all of six minutes before Benteke latched on to a pass from Delph after a brilliant build up from the halfway line to neatly slot home the Clarets’ equaliser.  After the half-time break it was Tim Sherwood’s men who took the lead at Wembley through Delph who managed to beat Simon Mignolet at his near post.

They had a chance to extend their lead when the Liverpool defence went to sleep once more but Kieran Richardson was not able to make it count.  Brendan Rodgers’ charges began to commit a lot more men forward in an attempt to get that all important equaliser.  They made two great attempts from Steven Gerrard and Mario Balotelli on goal in the final minutes.

One was cleared off the line and the other was denied due to Balotelli being deemed offside but replays clearly showed that he was well behind the last defender.  Despite the late charge and the clear howler Aston Villa booked their place in next month’s final with a 2-1 victory.
