Astana held Spanish champions Atletico Madrid to a 0-0 draw on Tuesday at the Astana Arena, meaning the champions of Kazakhstan have yet to be beaten at home this season. Even though the home team has never scored against their opposition, they were looking for a first win in the group stage, as well as redemption from the 4-0 loss to Atletico last month. The Red and Whites however, were looking to secure their progression into the knockout stages of the Uefa Champions League.
Despite the various opportunities, as well as having 56% possession, Diego Simeone’s men, failed to cement a single shot on target in the first half. In the second stanza, the 53rd minute saw a free kick given to Stanimir Stoilov’s men, which was taken by Dmitri Shomko, who sent it well over the bar. The score after 70 minutes remained goalless, with possession being slightly in favour of Atleti, but with only 20 minutes to go, there were still no noticeable moments in the match.
Since both the visitors, and the Blue and Yellows had not made many on-target goal attempts, it almost seemed as if Jan Oblak, and Eric were having more ball time than what the forwards were. Three minutes stoppage time were added and in the dying minute of the match Eric had to dive to save a shot from Yannick Carrasco, ending the match at 0-0, as Astana maintained an unbeaten home record in Europe this season.
