Arsenal Wins At Newcastle

Arsenal continued its good run of form against Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Saturday as an own goal by Fabricio Coloccini sealed a 1-0 victory for the Gunners and their second of the 2015/16 English Premier League campaign. It was a dominant first half performance from the visitors. Theo Walcott had two clear-cut chances to put the Londoners ahead but Tim Krul rushed out to save his first attempt while the forward completely missed the target on his second attempt as the empty net seemed to overwhelm the Englishman.

Arsene Wenger’s men looked dangerous on the counter attack and their good combination play was attractive to the eye. The Geordies had a relatively quiet first period after a positive start to the match and saw their talisman Aleksandar Mitrovic given his marching orders by Andre Marriner in the 16th minute for a studs-up challenge on Francis Coquelin. In the 52nd minute Tim Krul was finally beaten as an Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain shot deflected off Coloccini and into the back of the net.

Steve McClaren’s team was eager to reply and looked lively on the counter but struggled to gain possession from the away side. In the 80th minute the Magpies earned a free kick 25 yards out but wasted the opportunity as a ball into the box was easily cleared by the team in red and white. Olivier Giroud came closest to scoring in the second stanza and looked to continue his good scoring form against Newcastle but his attempted lob was saved by Krul.

Despite an excellent performance by the Dutch goalkeeper, the Tyneside team continues to search for its first win of the season and remains in the lower echelons of the log.
