Besiktas held ten-man Arsenal to a 0-0 draw after Aaron Ramsey was dismissed for two yellow cards in the dying minutes of the Uefa Champions League play-off in Istanbul on Tuesday. The Turkish side started the game sharply as Demba Ba saw his effort going straight to Wojciech Szczesny’s hands two minutes into the game. In the fifth minute Gunners goalkeeper Szczesny made a good save from a cracking volley from Ba who was troubling the visitors’ defence at the early stages of the match.
The Londoners started to find their rhythm as Alexis Sanchez’s low cross from the right flank found Olivier Giroud on the six-yard line but the Frenchman failed to capitalise. Arsene Wenger’s troops continued to control the game in the first twenty minutes. Before the half-time break the home side had a chance to take the lead but Ba missed after a terrible blunder from the visiting defence.
The Black Eagles of Turkey showed more hunger in the second half as the first chance of the second stanza fell to Kapatma Saha only for him to miss the target after a penetrative angled pass from Oguzhan Ozyakup on the left side of the area. The game started to fizzle with 30 minutes to go. Wenger’s men pushed for a goal as Sanchez and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were combining well but their attempts proved fruitless.
With only ten minutes remaining Arsenal had to soldier on with ten men after Ramsey was sent off for a second bookable offence. The match ended goalless.
