Argentina Downs French Barbarians

Argentina beat the French Barbarians 21-9 in the second and final match of a friendly series on Friday at the La Plata Rugby Club to wrap up preparations for the upcoming Rugby Championship.  The match started with the Argentine’s dominating territory and the crowd were dished up a high-tempo first half.  After a scrum in the 22 metre area of the visitors, the hosts took advantage as Martin Landajo found space and put Paulo Matera through for the opening try.

Then the French were able to approach the Argentine half and force the home team on to the back foot.  After an exchange of successful penalties by both kickers, the first half ended 11-6 in favor of Daniel Hourcade’s charges.  The beginning of the second half saw Los Pumas scoring points at the earliest opportunity.

In the first fifteen minutes of the second stanza, is add, Argentina maintained the intensity and rigour that had been present in the first half, but could not quite break through.  After twenty second half minutes, Nicolas Sanchez set up Javier Ortega Desio, who scored in the flag corner.

All in all Hourcade will be happy to have levelled the series and ultimately “win” the series on points difference, after falling in Rosario last week.  With this victory, Los Pumas’ preparations for the Rugby Championships ends as they prepare to travel on Saturday to Sydney.
