The South African men’s Water Polo team fell short as they were defeated by Kazakhstan in the final group game of the tournament at the FINA World Championships in Kazan on Friday. The much stronger Kazakhstan team claimed victory by 14 goals to 3. The SA team scored through youngster, Dayne Jagga as well as Nicholas Molyneux and Jon Marc De Carvalho.
Head coach Paul Martin says: ‘It was a very disappointing game from an individual and team perspective. Although the opposition is a vastly more experienced team, with very good outside shooters, the SA team did not come to play today.’ The 11th in the world, Kazakhstan netted though Alexandre Axenov (five), Sergey Gubarev (three), Branko Pekovich (two), Vladimir Ushakov (one), Alexey Shmider (one), Rustam Ukumanov (one) and Ravil Manafov (one). SA concluded the group stages in third position in Pool C and will now be facing either Australia, Montenegro or Serbia from Pool D in the Elimination Rounds on Sunday, 2nd August 2015.
Earlier on in the day, Micaela Bouter finished 27th and Julia Vincent 32nd in the Diving 3m Springboard preliminaries. Saturday’s programme will feature Nico Manoussakis in the 25km Open Water Swimming race, while the women’s Water Polo team will be facing New Zealand in the Elimination Round of the competition.
