Algeria are the number one team in Africa and would certainly want to prove that they deserve that status in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations tournament. Christian Gourcuff’s men gained qualification following victories over Mali, Malawi and Ethiopia to top group B with ease. The Desert Foxes are among the favourites coming into this tournament, however their seesaw performances when it matters most might prevent them from making an impact in Equatorial Guinea.
This is their 15th appearance in the continental competition and they have only managed to win it once, back in 1990. If the saying ‘You are as good as your last game’ is anything to go by, the Algerians will hope to turn their spirited qualification round display into dominance at the highest level on the continent. The North Africans find themselves in Group C alongside the Black Stars of Ghana, a resurrected South African side and the unpredictable Senegal.
Gourcuff will count on the experience of the likes of Raïs M’Bolhi between the sticks and Islam Slimani in front of goal in order to ensure a memorable appearance at the 2015 AFCON. Whether Algeria will continue from where they left off in the qualification stages or whether they will disappoint as per the recent norm recently remains unknown until the 19th of January when they lock horns with Bafana Bafana at the Estadio de Mongomo. The Algerians proved successful in Brazil at the FIFA World Cup last year when they reached the Second Round.
