Ajax Cape Town climbed to sixth on the Absa Premiership log as they beat the University of Pretoria 2-0 at the Cape Town Stadium on Friday night. It was a slow start for both teams as neither could get a proper foothold on the match. The first shot on target fell to the visitors as Anssi Jaakkola did well to tip Denver Mukamba’s well taken free-kick over the bar in the 17th minute.
The Urban Warriors came close to netting the opener when Nathan Paulse flicked on Jaakkola’s goal-kick to Keagan Dolly, who got behind Tuks’ defence but his weak shot was easily gathered by Washington Arubi. AmaTuks’ best chance in the match came in the 29th minute as Thabo Mosadi created space on the wing and cut the ball back for Atusaye Nyondo but his shot hit the post. Roger De Sa’s men finished the half strongly and had a good opportunity to open the scoring in first-half added time as Paulse rose highest to connect with Erwin Isaacs’ cross but the striker failed to find the target as it remained 0-0 at half-time.
The hosts dominated possession in the second half but struggled to convert it to goal scoring opportunities, with their closest attempt falling to Isaacs, but the midfielder slipped as he struck the ball and his effort went over the bar. Ajax finally opened the scoring as substitute Tashreeq Morris headed in Musa Lebusa’s cross in the 79th minute to give the home team the lead. Granwald Scott secured the points for the Capetonians with an excellent free-kick in the 90th minute as Sammy Troughton’s men suffered their second defeat in the space of five days and stretched their winless run to six games.
