A late goal from Travis Scott ensured Ajax Cape Town shared third place finish alongside SuperSport United after the teams played out to a 1-1 draw in the 3rd/4th-place play-off in the Cape Town Cup at the Cape Town Stadium on Sunday. It was SuperSport who settled the quickest and broke the deadlock in the 15th minute through Thuso Phala pounced on the loose ball after Jody February had initially done well to keep Jeremy Brockie’s close range header out. The goal seemed to stir Ajax as they began getting a foothold on the game and almost opened their account from Justin Jacobus’ header but it flew narrowly over the bar.
Brockie nearly doubled Matsatsantsa’s advantage in the 38th minute with a well taken free-kick but February was up to the task to keep the New Zealander’s strike out. Roger De Sa’s men had a great opportunity to draw level on the stroke of half-time after Ruzaigh Gamildien rounded the keeper but the resulting shot could only find the side netting. The Urban Warriors amped up the pressure on United’s goal and came close to grabbing the equaliser near the hour-mark after Cecil Lolo’s header from a Franklin Cale free-kick hit the bar.
The match looked to be heading SuperSport’s way until the 91st minute when Travis Graham rose highest to nod in the equaliser for the hosts. Gordon Igesund’s men nearly snatched the win with the last attack of the game but February dove low to make the crucial save to ensure the spoils were shared.
