Ajax Cape Town and Bloemfontein Celtic played to a 2-2 draw on Friday night in an Absa Premiership clash at the Cape Town Stadium. Celtic continues its winless streak and it is now five matches without a win and the pressure is on for the Free State club. Both teams were equally matched at the beginning of play and the match looked to becoming an entertaining one, which it indeed was.
Phunya Sele Sele’s Mthokozisi Dube unfortunately dislocated his shoulder early in the first half and had to be stretchered off the pitch. The first goal of the match came in the 20th minute for the visitors through Gabadinho Mhango who drove his shot into the right corner of the net after the intense pressing from the away side. The away club had more chances in the half, most notably an offside when the ball hit their own man when it was about to go into the net.
Ajax was struggling to find its rhythm, and was lucky not to be behind by more at half-time. Serame Letsoaka’s lads continued to dominate the match, early in the second half as well but were extremely wasteful of their chances. They were eventually punished for their missed opportunities when Toriq Losper scored after beating two defenders to score in the 63rd minute.
The pressure was on for both teams when it was level pegging once again and Letsoaka’s lot finally scored after all their missed chances when Thapelo Morena’s pace helped him past the Urban Warriors defenders with only seven minutes to go. It looked as if the Bloemfontein boys had three points in the bag, but a silly mistake inside the penalty area towards the end of the match caused them to concede a penalty which Nathan Paulse scored for Roger De Sa’s side.
The entertaining clash ended in a draw, and the teams shared the spoils after a very attractive night of football.
