Ajax Cape Town has advanced to the MTN8 final to play against Kaizer Chiefs after defeating Bidvest Wits 1-0 (2-1) on aggregate on Sunday afternoon in Johannesburg. Both teams started the match at a very slow pace with Wits being awarded the first corner of the match in the eighth minute after Henrico Botes’ shot was deflected. Elias Pelembe’s shot went straight to the goalkeeper Anssi Jaakkola after Botes’ cross in the 15th minute as the hosts looked for an opening.
Nathan Paulse converted a penalty for the visitors in the 22nd minute after Toriq Losper was brought down in the box by Siyabonga Nhlapo who was shown a red card for a tackle from behind. The home side was awarded a free kick just outside the box in the 45th minute after Sibusiso Vilakazi was brought down by Rivaldo Coetzee but it came to nothing.
The away side started the second half attacking with Riyaad Norodien forcing former Orlando Pirates keeper Moeneeb Josephs to make a save early in the second half. In the 67th minute Josephs made what seemed to be the save of the match from Paulse’s cross on the near side, stopping the ball from crossing the goal line. The Urban Warriors striker failed to connect his diving header with Cecil Lolo’s cross in the 70th minute leaving the ball to go out for a goal kick as Roger De Sa’s side could not bury the match.
The Cape Town side was awarded another penalty in the 85th minute after Norodien was brought down by Ben Motshwari in the box but Lolo failed to convert it leaving Josephs to make a save. It would matter not as De Sa got the better of Gavin Hunt to progress to a second straight final for the Cape club.
