Wigan Athletic and Queens Park Rangers played out a goalless draw in their Championship promotion play-off first leg at the DW Stadium on Friday. The two clubs have done well to reach this point after suffering Premier League relegation last season. This is an opportunity for the two to redeem themselves and return to the top flight but there can only be one.
Clint Hill gave Wigan an early corner in the third minute of the game and it proved to be a false dawn as the rest of the half proved rather quiet. Hill continued trying to create chances throughout the half but the Latics and Super Hoops were level at the break. In the second half there was a bit of pressure from Harry Redknapp’s side. However there was to be no breakthrough.
The sides will now travel to Loftus Road for the second leg. Earlier in the season QPR beat Wigan 1-0 at their London home ground and this is a good omen for Redknapp. The winner of this tie will play the victor between Derby County and Brighton and Hove Albion for the right to win promotion to England’s highest division.
