Soweto giants Orlando Pirates beat Bidvest Wits 2-0 at the Bidvest Stadium on Sunday afternoon in the second semi-final of the MTN8. The Clever Boys were looking to use their home advantage against the Buccaneers. After ten minutes it was still 0-0.
Mpho Makola had a knock on his head and was stretchered off the field of play but minutes later he continued to play. Both teams were trying hard to create clear chances and Pirates dominated the first half but Wits managed to hold and the match went to half-time 0-0. In the second half the Sea Robbers were looking for the crucial away goal while Gavin Hunt’s side were trying to use their home advantage.
In the 56th minute Siyabonga Sangweni’s header from Daine Klate’s corner handed Vladimir Vermezoic’s men a vital away goal and a 1-0 lead. The hosts were chasing the game as Pirates continued to threaten on set pieces. In the 69th minute Henrico Botes was
replaced by Sthembiso Ngcobo as they were looking for the equaliser.
There was a quick counter attack from Pirates started by Senzo Meyiwa who passed to Sfiso Myeni and Thabo Matlaba received a pass
from Myeni and finished off the job with the second goal for the Buccaneers in the 72nd minutes. Pirates managed to hold on and secure the crucial away win by scoring two goals to none and Wits have some work to do in the second leg.
