Western Province maintained their 100% start to the Absa Currie Cup seasnon after beating the Golden Lions 27-14 at Newlands in Cape Town on Saturday. Stokkies Hanekom got the game started with a deep kick. Kobus Van Wyk winged a try and Demetri Catrakilis kicked an amazing conversion to hand Province the first seven points of the game.
A few minutes later Catrakilis’ kick was far off but Van Wyk fought hard to win the ball in the air and caught the oval before racing over for his second try. Catrakilis kicked another conversion as Allister Coetzee’s side were dominating. The Lions finally made a dent on the scoreboard thanks to a penalty by Ruan Combrinck.
A minute before the first half ended, Andries Coetzee fought off the home defence to cross for a try. The first half ended with Province leading 14-8. Catrakilis started the second half.
The visitors’ scrum earned them a penalty which was kicked by Combrinck. Johan Acerkmann’s side were back in the game at 14-11. Catrakilis and Combrinck would trade penalties before another three-pointer came the way of Western Province, who were now leading 20-14.
Kurt Coleman passed the ball to Juan De Jongh and Jaco Taute scooped up the ball to score against his old side before Coleman kicked a fine conversion from out wide. That brought the score to 27-14 and that was how it would finish.
