Group D features two traditional powerhouses on the continent who will be looking to redeem themselves after poor displays at the FIFA World Cup last year. The Africa Cup of Nations Group D also features two other top sides that could easily see this pool termed a group of death.
Cameroon won back-to-back titles in 2000 and 2002 and topped a difficult qualifying Group D ahead of Ivory Coast, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Sierra Leone. The Indomitable Lions showed much better form in qualifying than they did in Brazil and if they can carry that through into Equatorial Guinea then they are going to be genuine contenders for the title.
Ivory Coast are another side who are desperate to make up for a poor World Cup. However they must overcome the Cameroonians who showed them up in qualifying. Nevertheless the Elephants almost always arrive at an AFCON as title contenders and 2015 will be no different.
Guinea are to be underestimated at one’s peril. They have been worthy competitors at the continental showpiece over the years and have gradually moved up the continental rankings over the years and are a decent dark horse bet.
Mali fall into the same category as the Guineans. Regular dark horses and they have the personnel to back up their credentials. The Eagles will have it tough in this group but that statement can be made of all four sides and despite the difficulty they face here, they will still expect a quarter-final berth.
